The Center for the Future of Forests and Society (CFFS) guides the College of Forestry’s efforts to imagine, pursue and share research that understands forests as living, interdependent systems — ecological, social and ethical. Working alongside the dean, CFFS helps set research priorities and directs support toward work that serves the diverse people, communities, industries and lands connected to forestry in Oregon, recognizing that we face the future together.
CFFS cultivates genuine interdisciplinarity, advances equity and brings diverse knowledge traditions into meaningful exchange, acknowledging that no single approach is sufficient for the challenges ahead. In alignment with the college’s 2023-2027 strategic plan, the center supports, funds and communicates research and outreach grounded in honest, forward-looking expectations about what can be accomplished in the coming decade. It elevates efforts that bring people, insights and practices together around shared work that cannot be addressed in isolation.
Through CFFS, the college advances research that is woven — ecology with sociology, technology with ethics, Western research traditions with Indigenous knowledge — to meet the pressures facing forests and the human communities who depend on them. CFFS moves forward guided by the following:
- Vision — our reality by 2030
Thriving forest ecosystems, economies, and communities in Oregon and beyond. - Mission — the work we do
To advance systems-based science and knowledge to ensure the resiliency of our forests, inform sustainable forest management practices and positively impact society. - Purpose — why we do this work
To ensure forests provide for societal and ecological well-being. - Values — our code of conduct
