Fungus Among Us lecture series

By students, for students: The College of Forestry Student Ambassadors present Fungus Among Us, a lecture series devoted to all things fungi. See below for our upcoming lectures and how to register. All events are virtual, free and open to the public! Watch the past lectures below, and stay tuned for information about the next lecture in the series.

Assembly and Function of the Leaf Mycobiome

Monday, May 24 @4pm Pacific Time

Lecture Description:
The third event in our series focuses on plant-fungal interactions with OSU’s own Posy Busby!

About our Lecturer:
Posy Busby is an Assistant Professor in the OSU Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. Lecture 1

Evolutionary Fungal Bacterial Interactions and the Fungal Microbiome
Dr. Jessie Uehling
Oregon State University Associate Professor, Department of Botany & Plant Pathology
Monday, March 8 @4pm Pacific Time

Lecture Description: To kick off this student-led lecture series, OSU Associate Professor Dr. Jessie Uehling will present a hybrid lecture on endosymbiont and fungal relationships and fungal infections. This virtual lecture is free and open to the public!

About Dr. Uheling: Jessie Uehling is a mycologist and evolutionary geneticist focused on understanding how fungi evolve in their symbioses with other organisms. Together with her lab in the Botany and Plant Pathology Department at Oregon State University, they use evolutionary genomics to study bacterial fungal interactions. Their goal is to understand mechanisms of bacterial endosymbionts of fungi interact with their hosts. They seek to identify the consequences of these interactions for genome evolution; and to quantify how populations of fungi and endosymbionts evolve together. You can learn more about their research, methods, and lab at Uehlinglab.com.

Lecture 2

The Fungus that Heals: The Future of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy in Oregon
Panel discussion with Brock Binder, Dr. Kimberly Wolk Golletz and Dr. Daniel V. Golletz

Lecture Description: The second event in our series focused on one of the many human values of fungi, with Brock Binder of High Quality Dispensary joined by licensed Psychologists Dr. Kimberly Wolk Golletz and Dr. Daniel V. Golletz. Together, they will present on the science and future of psilocybin-assisted therapy as treatment for mental health disorders, the recently passed Oregon Measure 109, and answer your questions.

About Brock Binder: Brock has been an active member of the plant medicine community since 2009. To assist his mother in overcoming life-threatening alcohol and opioid addictions, Brock utilized natural medicines that assisted her in becoming opioid-free within a six-month program. He leveraged this experience to dive deeper into understanding the underlying mental health crises in Oregon and opened up the state’s 14th licensed medical cannabis dispensary, becoming the youngest dispensary owner in the nation. Studying agricultural business management and horticulture at Oregon State University, he’s immersed himself to ensure fair access to cannabis and psilocybin, by educating local and federal lawmakers to pioneer opportunities that address the mental health and opioid crises that exist today.

About Kimberley Wolk Golletz: Kimberley Wolk Golletz, Ph.D. received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1988 from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Golletz has been on the faculty at the University of Washington, Linfield College, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been the director of an outpatient psychology clinic and has been on the staff at Children's Hospitals in Seattle and Chicago. Her specialties include psychological testing and family psychology. Dr. Kimberley Wolk Golletz is a Licensed Psychologist in Oregon and Washington.

About Daniel V. Golletz: Daniel V. Golletz, Ph.D. received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1996 from the University of Washington. He completed his clinical internship training at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. Dr. Golletz's practice is limited to adults. His specialties include cognitive-behavioral therapy, treatment of anxiety, and assessment and treatment of adult ADHD. Dr. Daniel Golletz is a Licensed Psychologist in Oregon.
