These quilts were hand-stitched by my great-grandma, Phyllis, who was a prolific quilter. The two here with dates were made in 1980 and 1991. Our family has always been spread out across the country, but every household has several of these and they are traded around quite a bit. I have been told repeatedly that they aren't meant to sit in a closet! Those from a few families were brought out to Oregon to be used as picnic blankets at my wedding. The baby quilt on top of this rocker was well-loved by my two kids and is soon to be sent to an aunt in New York for mending before going to Georgia to welcome my cousin's new baby. These quilts maintain direct physical connections between families who rarely see one another in person, and remind us of our common history that would most likely be forgotten as we go about our individual lives.
