My mom's sister made a baby blanket for all the kids of her 5 siblings in the 70's & 80's, and every single one of those blankets have been passed down to the next generation and are still being cuddled with today! I asked my aunt about the blankets and she said that as a young mom herself with a tight budget, she needed to figure out a way to gift all her new nieces and nephews. She was gifted a sewing machine she needed to learn how to use and her mother-in-law shared a flannel fabric with her that was not only cuddly, but that she swore would hold up to lots of washing and drying. A bonus was that because the blankets she made were lightweight, they didn't cost much to mail! She loved working with the flannel and satin binding, fussing with the corners when they didn't match up right (something I learned when I tried to make a similar blanket for my child - was not nearly as successful as my aunt, see pic, mine on the left obviously!). My aunt has made over 30 blankets and is currently making one for her new great grandson. My cousins and I still have our blankets and passed them down to our children; it's something we all share and tell stories about our childhood adventures with "blankie" which got us all through lots of scary and happy times. With all of us so far flung with different lives, it's sweet to have this one thing in common continues to connect us.
