In 2026, Oregon State University’s College of Forestry will celebrate 100 years of stewardship of the McDonald research forest — a living legacy that has shaped forest management, education, research and recreation across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
What began in 1926 with the acquisition of a single parcel of land has grown into a statewide network of 10 research and demonstration forests. For a century, the McDonald Forest has served as an outdoor classroom for generations of students, a living laboratory for innovative forestry research, and a place where the public can connect with actively managed forests through recreation and learning. Its history reflects evolving approaches to sustainability, land management and community engagement, while remaining grounded in long-term stewardship.
To mark this centennial milestone, the College of Forestry will be hosting a number of events, reflecting on the past, present and future of the forests, and investing in new signage and interpretation on the McDonald Forest.

Learning from the Landscape: A Century of Research Forest Discoveries
Explore the role of research forests over the past century and how changing knowledge and pressures are shaping their future. The opening lecture on January 21 will be hosted by Bill Robbins, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of History, Oregon State University.
April 2: PRAx and the College of Forestry Present: Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble
7 p.m. in Detrick Hall
From Maxville to Vanport: A Celebration of Oregon’s Black History
This music-and-film performance adds cultural perspective to the centennial, honoring the communities and individuals — including Black Oregonians — who shaped Oregon’s forestry history.
April 29: Roots Run 5K for Dam Proud Day
Forestry Club Cabin, McDonald Forest
Open to all, this fun run/walk/stroll led by the College of Forestry Student Ambassadors supports Dam Proud Day fundraising efforts. Registration for the Roots Run 5K will open in March 2026.
