Lutz Klein is a research assistant and PhD candidate with the Hydrology Lab at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bonn, Germany. He holds a master’s degree in geography with a focus on hydrology. His research primarily focuses on ecohydrological and catchment-scale processes in forested and mountainous environments. Currently Lutz’s work deals with wildfire impacts on catchment scale hydrological processes in the Oregonian Cascades. In his free time, he enjoys biking, bouldering, and pretty much any other outdoor sport. During his three-month stay with the Forest Engineering, Resources and Management (FERM) Department at OSU, Lutz will continue his collaboration with Professor Catalina Segura on the project “Fire-Stream: Insights into Wildfire Effects on Streamflow Generation and Water Quality”. The project focuses on the 2023 Lookout Wildfire which burned large areas of the HJ. Andrews Experimental Forest. Through extensive field campaigns and hydrological modelling, the research aims to better understand wildfire impacts on water flow paths and transit times in mountainous catchments. Besides gathering new data in the field, the visit is a great opportunity to work closely with the other project members and further develop the collaboration.
