College of Forestry Council of Student Organizations

The College of Forestry Council of Student Organizations ("the Council") is a governing body of the sponsored student clubs and organizations in the College of Forestry. 

The Council serves to:

  • Support student clubs and organizations sponsored by the College of Forestry
  • Represent student clubs in the mission of the College of Forestry
  • Coordinate and develop new student clubs within the College of Forestry
  • Oversee participation awards and funding requests for College of Forestry student clubs

The Council is made up of council representatives from each club and the COF student services coordinator.

Membership and Funding

All student clubs and organizations which are sponsored by the College of Forestry are eligible for membership in the Council. Current council members are eligible to submit proposals for annual participation awards and funding requests. Participation awards are available for events and activities that positively represent the College of Forestry, provide educational experiences, offer professional development, make efforts toward membership recruitment, and further promote the mission of the College of Forestry student clubs and organizations.

Funding is not available for general club management, and is not available to clubs and organizations who do not hold membership in the Council.

Membership requires the following:

  • A one-time submission of a letter of intent to join, due by 5 p.m. of the Friday Week 9 of the preceding spring term.
  • An annual letter to summarize their events for the year, stating that the club or organization has met all the membership requirements, due within 30-days of requirement completion.

Funding is requested through the annual submission of a funding proposal, due by 5 p.m. on the Friday of Week 2 of fall term. Funding proposals should include the anticipated price of and details about the specific/significant events that meet funding requirements.

All required letters and proposals must be submitted to the College of Forestry Student Service Office, by 5 p.m. on the Friday of the week noted above.

Requirements

College of Forestry Council Membership Requirements:

  • All club officers are required to complete all IdealLogic training modules.
  • Participate in at least 3 OoF/OSU events, including but not limited to the Forestry Career Fair, Federal and State Employer Panels, Annual Ring, Beaver Community Fair, Dean's Office events and approved club-specific educational activities.
  • Engage in at least 1 membership drive per year.
  • Engage in at least 1 fundraiser per year.
  • Sponsor at least 1 COF workshop or professional development event per year.
  • Attend an all-officers, all-clubs COF Student Clubs meeting each year.
Council Representatives

The Council representatives are elected as officers in their club or organization during the normal election processes. They cannot represent more than one club as the Council representative, nor hold other officer positions within their club. The representatives must:

  • Attend and participate in all Council meetings.
  • Ensure that their club or organization is meeting the requirements for membership in the Council.
  • Work with their club or organization treasurer, president, and other officers to submit an annual proposal for participation awards.
  • Submit the letter of intent to join and the annual summarization of events and activities.

Participation Awards

Participation awards are only available to clubs with representation in the Council and who are in good standing with the Council (meeting requirements, maintaining eligibility). Proposals will be sought, reviewed, and funded through the Council. Proposals are due to the Student Resources & Engagement Office, Snell 133, no later than 5 p.m. on the Friday of the second week of fall term and should include a request for funding for specific/significant activities for which clubs are seeking supplemental support beyond what is available through annual fundraising or through club MU accounts. Award decisions will be made by the Assistant Dean of Student Success. No club shall receive a greater appropriation than the amount for which they applied. 

Criteria for funding distribution shall be based upon, but not exclusive to, the consideration of the following:

  1. Broaden and enhance the educational experience(s) of club members by enabling them to attend professional conferences, events, seminars, etc.
  2. Offer professional development, leadership, team-building, etc. experience for club officers and members.
  3. Publicize and positively represent the College of Forestry.
  4. Efforts made toward engaging COF students, and efforts made toward membership recruitment.
  5. Quality and completeness of the proposal.
  6. Previous engagement in club and COF activities, volunteering, etc.
  7. Need, past allocation of funding, status of club fundraising efforts.
  8. Club must be in good standing with the Council.
  9. Clubs have provided a summary of the event, including details of the educational benefit, including a photo of participants for activities for which funds have been received.

Funding restrictions.

  1. Funds are not available for, and shall not be used for general club management (food, membership fees, tools/equipment, etc.).
  2. Funding will not be available to clubs whose membership in the Council has been revoked.

Funds not utilized by June 30 are forfeited. At the end of each term clubs are required to complete a recap or summary that outlines how funds were utilized. Copies of receipts are required. A recap is required even if funds are not utilized in a given term. Be sure to keep a copy of each recap for club records. Additionally, at the end of the academic year a report (which will be sent to the donor of the funds that support participation awards) detailing how the funding supported and enhanced your clubs engagement, activities, education, etc. is due.
