FOR 353 Field School
Welcome!
Field School is a 3-unit required course for all Recreation Resource Management majors. It is not usually open to other majors. Field School is usually taken between your junior and senior year. It combines physical work with intellectual challenges, requires a one week commitment, and takes place in a setting far from the OSU campus. As a student in this course, your objectives are:
- To acquire hands-on experience working on real projects in close cooperation with agency personnel.
- To become familiar with a different bioregion's characteristics, heritage, and unique land management issues.
- To live and work with your peers for an intensive period, promoting a common sense of mutual purpose and professional commitment.
- To make a contribution through voluntary service to the hosting agency's ongoing land management program.
Past activities have included visitor surveys, vegetation restoration, camping facility construction, backcountry clean-up (graffiti, fire rings, etc.), trail-building, interpretive planning, and various inventories of resources and visitor impacts. Most groups have presented both an oral and written report to the cooperating agency at the end of Field School , summarizing their findings, accomplishments, and recommendations.
