FOR353 Field School
Suggested equipment list
We will be outdoors most of the time, therefore plan accordingly. Be prepared for unpredictable weather--wind, rain, cold, and even snow is possible, depending on our work locations. The weather at this time of year is usually very pleasant, but don't count on it. Last year we had a lot of rain and even some freezing weather.
- Clothes for outside experience: long-sleeved shirts, good shoes/work boots, hat, work gloves, jeans or other durable pants.
- Hiking boots suitable for snow, mud, and stream crossings.
- Clothes for cold weather: fleece vest and/or sweater, wind jacket (nylon shell), gloves/mittens, wool/fleece hat
- Rain gear: rain jacket/pants combo (best) or poncho (may snag on brush)
- Sweater/fleece
- Shorts/T-shirt
- Undergarments/socks
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Swimsuit (hot tub and pool at the campground)
- Water bottles (minimum total 2 quarts)
- Day pack (adequate size for extra clothing)
- Backpack (optional)
- Field notebook or paper/clipboard, pencils, pens
- Binoculars/field guides/camera/film
- Bear spray (optional; park rangers and instructors will be equipped)
- Sleeping bag, pad

- Shelter: backpacking tent with a waterproof fly and ground cloth. An additional tarp may be useful for additional protection from the elements. You are encouraged to share tents - campsites and vans will be crowded if every individual has his or her own tent.
