Course Description

Managing fuels and fire behavior is an increasingly important part of forest ecosystem management in the West. It requires knowledge of: 1) combustion physics and chemistry; 2) basic fuel types and moisture relations; 3) fire weather; 4) ignition patterns and spread models; 5) silvicultural tools and approaches to fuels management; 6) inherent variability in burn intensity and severity; and 7) effects of fire on trees, stands and landscapes. This challenging topic therefore ranges from physics to ecology to sociology, and is geared to future land and natural resource management professions.
