Advising Rights and Responsiblities
The College of Forestry is committed to helping students succeed. You will be assisted
by an advisor in making appropriate course selections, reviewing the program options, and directing you
to information about mentoring and other professional opportunities. In addition, the college Student
Services office is a valuable source for information and assistance regarding university rules and
regulations, job placement opportunities, national and international exchange programs, and referrals
to other university programs and resources.
Advising is available at any time during the year if a student wants to discuss academic, professional,
or personal situations. The advising effort is one of mutual respect and collaboration between you and your
advisor. Making an appointment is strongly recommended. If the process is to be effective, both you and the
advisor must meet certain obligations. If either fails to keep their end of the bargain, the process is likely
to break down and neither will be satisfied with the results. In some cases, the advisor may be able to help
you through difficult academic or personal situations, but we also welcome the opportunity to celebrate your
successes.
While the advisor plays an important role and takes that role seriously, the important decisions are yours.
It’s up to you to take primary responsibility for planning your individual program and to meet academic
requirements and deadlines. Advisors can provide information, but you are the one to act on that information.
With that in mind: The more prepared you are, the smoother your advising session will go. During the pre-registration
advising period, appointments will be scheduled. Make an appointment and bring the following:
- A completed Course Planning Worksheet for the academic year. Use the online General Catalog
http://catalog.oregonstate.edu/ to select classes,
avoiding day and time conflicts. Find alternative courses where schedule conflicts do occur.
- Bring a list of specific questions or issues you wish to discuss
You should see your advisor when:
- you have questions about academic performance and progress;
- you need advice about adding, dropping, or withdrawing from a course, using S/U grading, or are thinking about changing majors;
- you are concerned about study skills, having difficulties in coursework;
- you want to discuss career considerations;
- you are applying for graduation; or
you need to register for the upcoming term. See your advisor for your PIN! (Registration PINS are provided once you’ve received academic advising. PINS allow you into the University’s electronic registration system. Department office staff WILL NOT provide your PIN – you must see your advisor)
