About
the Department of Forest Resources
The management of forest and related natural resources in the
future will increasingly rely on broad, multidisciplinary knowledge.
Our philosophy is to provide a rigorous, diversified educational
environment that fosters the development of citizens and professionals
cognizant of the broad spectrum of natural resource values and
stewardship. Emphasis is placed on both academic achievement and
practical experience.
Vision:
We aspire to be an acknowledged leader in teaching, research,
and extended education designed to sustain natural resources and
their ecological, economic, and social benefits in perpetuity. Identity:
Five attributes further define who we are. Together, these attributes
define our departmental identity, suggest our market niche,
and provide guidance in staffing, curricular, research outreach,
and related strategic decisions.
- Our programs prepare undergraduate and graduate students
to become successful managers and leaders in natural resource
management
and policy.
- Our activities focus on the interrelationships between
human society and the natural resources upon which society
depends.
- Our core expertise centers on natural resource assessment,
planning, and analysis with special emphasis on management
and policy implications.
- Our work involves the discovery, through research, of
new knowledge; its dissemination through undergraduate
and graduate
teaching,
extended education, and scholarly publication; and its
application to natural resource management and policy.
- Our work is interdisciplinary and collaborative.
We aspire to foster integrative understanding across functions,
disciplines,
scales, and world views.
Missions:
Our field of vision encompasses four core missions:
- Provide undergraduate and graduate degree programs and courses
for students in the College of Forestry; offer general elective

sustainability of forests and related natural resources.
- Conduct extended education programs for professional resource
managers and landowners, scientists and administrators,
policy makers and thought leaders, youth and teacher audiences,

the general public interested in forestry and natural resources;
and
