Mountain forests are valuable resources providing wood, water, wildlife
habitat, recreation and scenic quality. Meeting society's demands
for wood and wood products while maintaining and enhancing those
scenic, protective and productive values requires skillful application
of forest engineering knowledge.
Beginning
in 1969 and approximately every three years, the accumulated knowledge
and technology gained by experience and research of private industry,
contractors, and public organizations in the Pacific Northwest, and
around the world, are disseminated at the International Mountain
Logging and Pacific Northwest Skyline Symposium. Traditionally
the event has been hosted by rotation with Oregon State University;
the University of Washington; and the University of British Columbia
and the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC). In
2007, the symposium is hosted by Oregon State University and will
be held in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. The International Union of Forest
Research Organizations (IUFRO Division 3) is a co-sponsor, with the
objective of helping to coordinate mountain logging research activities
throughout the world.
Conference
Goals:
The goal of this symposium is to bring together a diverse group of
people associated with mountain logging to exchange ideas, share new
information and technology, and seek solutions to operational and
environmental challenges. The symposium itinerary will focus around
specific themes including technical, economic, environmental, and
social issues with harvest planning, forest road management, and logging.
Who
Should Attend:
Anyone involved with forest operations including logging managers
and contractors, machine manufacturers and vendors, private sector
resource managers, consultants, researchers, academicians, and others
interested in the environmental effects of harvesting. The program
will contain subject matter of interest to people engaged in both
coastal and interior operations in the Pacific Northwest as well as
other mountainous regions in the USA and internationally. The symposium
will provide an opportunity for participants to learn and share new
ideas not only from local experiences but also with an exchange of
new ideas from around the world.
Society
of American Foresters CFE Credits and Professional-Logger Program
credits will be available for conference participants.
