Global Sustainability

A future for us all . . .

At 2000 at the UN Millennium Summit, world leaders identified eight goals that lead towards a sustainable future of all people on the planet. Each goal represents an immense and complex task that lies before each of us. The goals are:

1. End extreme hunger and poverty

2. Establish universal primary education

3. Promote gender equality

4. Reduce child mortality

5. Improve maternal health

6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

7. Develop environmental sustainability

8. Establish a global partnership for development

It is easy to become discouraged when one considers such a large list of issues, wondering what we can do that will be tangible, and that these problems will likely not be solved in our lifetime. However, with regards to global sustainability, it is important to decide every day which side we will be on. Will we be part of the problem or the solution?

Never before, have there been more opportunities to make positive changes in the world and the lives of our fellow human beings. "Think globally, act locally" was coined by David Brower in 1969, and still today the phrase stands as a compelling reminder that the actions of individuals comprise change on the large scale. You can make a difference! The choices you make today will have impacts on the future.

The journey starts with a single step. Begin with something easy like recycling or writing your legislator. Move on to larger changes like using alternative transportation. Make a big step and get involved with a problem in your community or the world. It doesn't have to be from the list above. There are many more to choose from and the effort you give will make a difference. Together, with people all over the globe, we will build a bright future for generations to come.
